Amargosa & Death Valley History Tours & Hikes

For Couples, Families & Friends
Tour Details

Cynthia’s Safaris offers Amargosa Valley and Death Valley hikes and tours.  The American Southwest during the 1800’s and early 20th century is the most romanticized history of the of the United States.  This safari focuses on our local “wild west” history and is designed for couples, families, and friends.  It features exploration of 2 fascinating valleys of the American Southwest: The Amargosa Valley and Death Valley.  Cynthia’s Basecamp is in the heart of this country and sits among the remnants of a 20th century boomtown.  Ruins of mines of gold, silver, lead, iron, talc, and gypsum riddle our landscape.  Abandoned railroad beds furnish our off-road routes.  Our hikes follow ancient human footpaths.  Just to get to Cynthia’s Basecamp you must drive along the 1829 route of the Old Spanish National Historic Trail.

YOUR ROOM

Cynthia’s Basecamp offers a variety of guest rooms interwoven to be adjoined or to stand alone.  Cynthia will configure your room(s) according to group size and preferences.

YOUR MEALS

Prefix menus are designed with guest dietary restrictions in mind, such as allergies and medical conditions. Meals can be tailored to meat-eaters, vegetarians, or vegans.

What to Expect

Once you arrive, you will get a better feel for the area and your desired takeaway along with the current weather conditions, which often dictates the timing of your itinerary.  Be sure to bring layers of clothing, a headlamp, closed toe shoes, and water bottles (2 liters per person at least).  We provide all gear needed for your guided off-road adventure driving our desert vehicles. There is Wi-Fi at Cynthia’s Basecamp, but no cell phone reception within a 40-mile radius.  Your room is like a standard hotel room…only in the middle of desert.  Basecamp has a common room with a shared guest refrigerator.  Bring your favorite snacks, lunch items, and beverages.  Water is drinkable at Cynthia’s Basecamp.  Your region of exploration is half the size of Belgium, population 435.  There is little human development, most are remnants from the gold rush and mining heyday.  Full moonscapes are epic, our dark night skies are indescribable.

Itinerary

Day 1 Get to know the region-become a local

We’ll meet, and you’ll settle in to Basecamp.  Then back in your vehicle, you’ll follow my jeep for a “Walkie-Talkie” orientaion tour of local restaurants, hot spring options, interesting historical and geological features. By this time you will like a “local”. Then a lovely dinner followed by campfire, star gazing and/or a hot spring soak under the stars.

Day 2 The Wild Wild West - The Amargosa Basim

Wake up to a hearty breakfast at Basecamp. Gear up for your guided OHV Heritage Tour of the old mining district of the Gold Rush era.  Take an optional tour of the old War Eagle mine if you like.  Back to Cynthia’s Basecamp to relax and then out to lunch on your own.  Then a guided hike in the Amargosa River Canyon, to explore its history, geology and raw beauty.  Out to dinner on your own at one of our local restaurants or breweries. Then back to Basecamp for a campfire, stars, or add a trip to the hot springs.

Day 3Death Valley National Park

Following breakfast at Cynthia’s Basecamp, we will discuss your desired takeaway from Death Valley.  Cynthia will curate your driving tour of the Park accordingly.  This is an all day affair, so lunch and dinner will be on your own in the Park. Cynthia will make recommendations and reservations for you.

Day 4Discussion and good-byes over Breakfast

There is always so much to absorb and think about in this desert immersion experience. This is usually the time for lively discussions of a deeper nature. We all come away renewed, inspired, and a little wiser about the natural world and our place in it.
